Violin-making is by far the most well-known aspect of Cremona, both in Italy and abroad. It is possibile to visit the workshop of a violin-maker explaining how violins, violas, celloes and double-basses keep being made, following the best cremonese tradition developed by Antonio Stradivari.
In Cremona you can hear the voice of one of the instruments of the Civic Collection inside the Palazzo del Comune: enjoy the performance with the violin "Carlo IX" made by Andrea Amati in 1566, or with the "Cremonese 1715" made by Antonio Stradivari, or with the "Stauffer 1734" made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesł!
Music spreads everywhere downtown, performed by students, violin-makers and professional players, both in music-rooms and halls, such as the Ponchielli Theatre offering regular opera and ballet seasons.
Mondomusica is one of the most important international fairs for the musical instrument market: it takes place
yearly in Cremona, while the Fondazione Stradivari announces every three years the Triennale, international
competition awarding the best contemporary violins, violas, celloes and double-basses, then shown to the public
at the permanent exhibition inside the Palazzo Fodri.Throughout the whole province of Cremona another tradition is still alive: that of the Organ-Makers, making and restoring this type of instruments. At times it is possible to assist to a phase of a restoring intervention: it is a unique experience indeed!
